Lola of Karao

Honorable Mention

I met this woman on her doorstep in the village of Karao, in the Cordillera Mountains. She was surprised to see outsiders walking past her front door. She told me about her memories of hiding from Japanese soldiers in the hills around Karao during World War II. She remembers those were years when rice was not planted, not harvested. She remembers food falling in packages from the sky. She is a member of the Igarot tribe. She is a lola, a grandmother.
