China’s desire to rapidly develop and catch up with other politically and economically dominant countries have left an impression of dirty, polluted, and overcrowded cities. On the other side of the equation, China’s rural countryside is an image of underdeveloped and impoverished villages. Neither of these tells the entire story, and China, as a whole, is deeper and more diverse than meets the eye. Yangshou, China is reflective of an ancient Chinese aesthetics for natural beauty that persists to today despite development.
