Dina Vakil '69
(first female editor of the Times of India)
If the close working relationships between students and professors encouraged Dina Vakil, a student from India, to become a part of the Mount Holyoke community, she left valuing another aspect of her education in the Pioneer Valley. After graduating, Dina reflected on volunteering in Holyoke, “a very real kind of city which has its own kind of cool,” where people seemed “genuinely concerned” about improving their quality of life.
After attending Columbia School of Journalism, Dina started her career in the press section of the United Nations. Her dreams and ambition, however, led her back to India where she hoped to secure a job with the Times Group. After holding multiple positions at different publications, she ended up fulfilling her dream and becoming the first female resident editor of the Mumbai Edition of the Times of India (the most widely circulated newspaper in English).
