Helga Jahncke Hernes '61
(Norwegian political figure and diplomat)
Helga Jahncke Hernes made her way to Mount Holyoke in the late 1950s as a German Foreign Fellow. She was fascinated by courses such as Advanced Comparative Foreign Government, Public Administration and Government Policies for Economic Reform.
Helga continued her education in political science by earning a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1970. Following her graduation, she taught at the University of Bergen, Norway. Afterwards, she served as Norwegian State Secretary in the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advised Norway’s peacekeeping operations, and served as Norwegian ambassador in different European countries. Particularly concerned with women’s rights, in 2010 Helga co-edited Women and War: Power and Protection in the 21st Century, considered a"critical text for every mediator, peacekeeper, and policymaker working in the international peace and conflict arena."
