Location: Beijing, China
Qualifications: Intermediate-Advanced level Chinese, interest in journalism and Asian Studies
Housing: secured with assistance of host organization and McCulloch Center
An affiliate of NBC Universal, NBC News Beijing produces pieces for the Today Show, NBC Nightly News, CNBC and MSNBC. Located in a diplomatic compound in the heart of the city, the NBC Beijing office includes 5 professional staff.
The work of the intern may include: reviewing Chinese blogs to identify main topics of discussion; on a daily basis identifying top headline stories; transcribing interviews; and assisting with administrative tasks in the office as needed.
In a more quiet news cycle, the student is encouraged to take initiative and develop a writing/shooting project of her own, which she may pursue with the approval of her supervisor.
The ideal candidate will have very strong Chinese language skills (speaking, reading, writing), an interest in China and social issues, as well as intellectual curiosity and strong problem-solving skills.
For a student whose Chinese reading and writing skills are not as advanced, the work of an intern may include more administrative tasks.
