Street Smarts: An Unpaid Intern’s Tale of Surviving NYC

A NYC internship may seem glamorous, but it comes with a price. This summer, I participated in a Politics program that combined intensive coursework with an internship at the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative. As an intern, I learned the nuances of working in the Advocacy and Policy field of HIV vaccine research;  in class, I analyzed political regimes, visited the United Nations, and attended lectures given by prestigious scholars. As a young adult living in the city, however I realized the importance of networking and hard work-not to mention, strict budgeting-and how these factors play a role in ensuring a productive internship experience as well as in securing opportunities for the future.
