What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows you to borrow materials from other libraries by going through the MHC library. All currently enrolled students, faculty and staff of Mount Holyoke College may use this service free of charge.

ILLiad is the electronic system you use to request an item through Interlibrary Loan. It is an acronym for InterLibrary Loan internet accessible database.

How can I search for materials at other libraries?

Use WorldCat to search for materials in libraries across the U.S. and even internationally. You can also discover articles in journals not owned by MHC through Discover Supersearch and our article databases.

How does it work?

To submit a request, log on to ILLiad. If it is your first time, you will have to set up an account before making a request. Once signed in to ILLiad, you can fill out a request by selecting the appropriate form depending on what type of material you need. If you find an item in an online database that you would like to request, click on the red MHLinks button; if the item is not available at MHC or in the Five Colleges, click on the “Request document via ILLiad” link. This method will populate the form for you. Please check for errors and add any other necessary information.

When the item has arrived, you will be notified by email. Books can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Articles are usually provided electronically; in cases where this is not possible, a photocopy will be sent to your campus mailbox.

How long will it take?

The library uses Rapid ILL for article delivery, and 98% of the time, requested articles are emailed to you within 24 hours. Books arrive through the mail and 95% of the time are available for pick-up within 7 business days.

What can I get through ILLiad?

  • Books that are not in the Five Colleges (for books in the Five Colleges, use Five College Borrowing through the library catalog)
  • Journal articles that are not available at MHC
  • Conference papers, dissertations, essays within books, and other text-based materials.

What can I not get through ILLiad?

  • Reference books
