Using the LRC

Purpose and Priorities

The Language Resource Center is, first and foremost, a space for learning, teaching, sharing and exploring languages and cultures. As such, priority may be given to language or culture-related activities.

Who can use the LRC?

Anyone is welcome to use the LRC for language learning and/or teaching, including students, faculty and staff from MHC and all of the Five Colleges, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in a language course. 

All patrons are asked to help the staff in keeping the LRC a clean, warm, and inviting space for all.

  • If you make mess, please clean up after yourself. Please ask at the main desk, and the LRC staff will be happy to provide you with cleaning supplies.
  • As you leave the LRC, please take a look around to see if you have left anything behind. Please throw away or recycle any waste.

Can I print in the LRC?

Yes, the LRC has a print-release station with the campus-wide One Card system and a black-and-white laser printer. You can print from any computer in the LRC, then go to the release station (located by the main desk) to swipe your One Card and release your printing job.

Can events be hosted in the LRC?

  • Groups involved in culture- or language-related activities are encouraged to reserve the LRC. We love to host language teas, conversation groups, study sessions, cultural events, etc.
  • To maintain an inviting space, the hosts are required to clean up following their event. Please use common courtesy and observe the following guidelines:
    • The LRC can provide you with cleaning supplies; please ask at the main desk.
    • If there is food at your event:  Wipe down all table surfaces used, including tables where food was served, as well as all areas where participants were sitting and eating. Vacuum the floor around all of these areas as well.
    • You are welcome to use the microwave oven and refrigerator in Room 5 for your event, but please cover food while microwaving, wipe up any spills, and don’t forget to take your leftovers with you.
    • Any garbage cans that are filled during the event need to be emptied afterwards. Remove the garbage bag from the can, seal it and place it in the large bin in the Trash Room (second door on left as you exit the LRC). Place a new liner bag in the can that you emptied.
  • You are welcome to rearrange lounge furniture for activities such as small group conversations or a salsa dance lesson, but please return it to the original positions.

Reserving LRC Facilities

Any member of the MHC community and Five Colleges is welcome to reserve a space in the LRC, including students, student organizations, faculty or staff, for class work, for campus events, etc. Priority for reservations will be given to the MHC community.

Multimedia Studios (6D, 6E, 6F and 6G)

For future weeks, please see a staff member at the LRC desk or call x3513. If the reservation is for the current week, feel free to sign up on the sheet that is posted to each individual door.

  • These rooms can be reserved for work requiring the special capabilities of these facilities, such as:
    • Multimedia projects
    • Viewing international films
    • Video conferencing
    • Tutoring or work in small groups
  • They may not be reserved for individual study or for other purposes that are not related to the priorities of the space.
  • Students may reserve 1 studio room for up to 3 hours maximum per day. For any other special arrangements, please contact the LRC Director in advance to discuss the request.
  • When these rooms are not reserved, they may be used on a first-come, first-served basis:
    • Although the studios may be used for any purpose, you may be asked to leave when patrons with language/cultural projects require the space.

Circulation of Materials and Equipment

All items must be checked out for use by all patrons, even if the item is to be used in the LRC. This applies equally to faculty and staff, even for items owned by faculty or departments and put on reserve in the LRC. This is necessary for a number of reasons:

  • By checking items out, we are able to keep track of where the item is and who has it.
  • If an item is taken but not checked out, the library catalog will indicate that it is available, which is misleading to other patrons.
  • Checking items out also ensures we have accurate statistics for item use.

How do I check out items from the LRC?

  • Reserve items and equipment may be requested for check out at the LRC main desk with a MHC One card.
  • Items in the LRC's permanent collection that are shelved around the LRC may be brought by the patron to the LRC main desk for check out.
  • A Five College library card is required to check out items from the LRC

How many items can I check out from the LRC?

  • 3-hour loan items (e.g., reserves, certain reference materials and equipment): 2 items
  • 3-day loan items (e.g., most equipment, leisure films): 5 items
  • 1-month (regular) loan items (e.g., books in the LRC’s permanent collection): unlimited
  • The limits apply to all patrons (students, faculty and staff).
  • Exceptions to these limits may be granted on a case-by-case basis; contact the LRC Director in advance to discuss the request.

How long can items be checked out?

  • For reserve materials, the default loan period is 3 hours.
    • When an instructor places material on reserve in the LRC, she may specify a different loan period and whether or not materials may be used outside of the LRC.
    • See the section on “Course Reserves” for more information about reserves.
  • For materials in the LRC's permanent collection, the loan period varies by item, based on the type of item and the demand for the item.
    • These materials may in some cases be loaned for three days or longer and may be taken out of the LRC.
  • When necessary, longer loan periods can sometimes be arranged:
    • For faculty/staff: notify the LRC staff person when checking out, and the due date can be adjusted.
    • For students: contact the LRC Director in advance to discuss the request.

How do I know when an item is due?

  • When you check an item out from the LRC, the staff person will tell you the due date and time, please ask if this information was not provided.
  • You can also check the due date at any time through the online library catalog.


Can items be checked out overnight?

  • Only materials specifically designated to leave the LRC may be checked out overnight.
    • If these items are checked out within three hours of closing, the due time for the item will be extended to one hour after the LRC opens the next day.
  • Items that are not allowed to leave the LRC may not be checked out overnight.

Can Five College students check things out?

  • Anyone with a Five College library card may check out materials from the LRC.
  • Five College students, faculty, and staff have the same privileges in the LRC as their Mount Holyoke equivalents.

How do I return items to the LRC?

  • Materials must be returned during the open hours of the LRC (refer to sidebar for hours).
  • Return materials to the LRC main desk, by giving the item directly to the LRC staff person on duty, or placing it in the basket marked “Returns."
  • If a patron returns an item directly to the shelf, the staff will not be able to check that item in, and the patron may incur a fine regardless of whether the item was returned on time.

Are there fines for overdue materials?

  • LRC materials incur the same fines as any other materials checked out through the MHC library system.
    • Fines are determined and administered by the Main Library.
    • See the LITS website for detailed information about fines.
    • The LRC cannot accept fine payments, nor can LRC staff provide information about a fine.
  • Any item (regardless of type, including books, equipment, etc.) not returned or returned damaged due to misuse/neglect will incur a replacement charge plus billing fees.
  • If a patron believes that she has been erroneously fined for material from the LRC, she should contact the LRC Director.

Can I reserve equipment to use at a specific time?

  • Please use the Media Equipment Reservation form on LITS.
  • To reserve LRC equipment that is only available at the LRC contact the LRC Director in advance to discuss the request.
  • These requests will be approved on a case-by-case basis, depending on the availability and demand for the equipment. 

Reserving Course Material (Faculty instructions)

What type of material can be put on reserve?

  • Any material owned by a faculty member or by a department may be put on reserve at the LRC.
  • Materials owned by the Main Library are generally put on reserve at the Main Library. Under certain circumstances, it may be possible to move Main Library items to LRC reserves temporarily; however, arrangements must be made in advance and items may be recalled to the Main Library if needed.
  • We cannot put items owned by a Five College Library or another library on reserve at the LRC.

How are items put on reserve?

Please go to the LITS How to Submit Reserve Requests to access the system and for further information.

As part of LITS, the LRC uses the same online system for faculty to submit and track requests for print reserves, e-reserves, and video.

  • One copy of all required reading texts for each course will automatically be placed on reserve in LITS. Please see this page for more information. If faculty would rather have the text on reserve at the LRC, that is an option as well. 
  • For personal copies of texts, faculty or department staff should bring the material(s) to the LRC and talk to the Director about filling out the appropriate form.
    • On the form, the faculty may choose the loan period and whether or not the item may be used outside of the LRC:
      • The default loan period for reserve items is 3 hours.
      • By default, items are allowed to leave the LRC.
    • If multiple copies of the same item are being placed on reserve, it is only necessary to complete one form for all items with the same title.
    • If material will be used again in subsequent semesters, a professor may indicate on the form that the item should remain on reserve indefinitely.
      • In this case, the material will automatically be transferred into the reserves for the same course in future semesters, and the material will remain in the LRC until the faculty chooses to retrieve it.
  • LRC staff will enter the material into the library system. After the item has been cataloged, it will be available to students via the LRC Main Desk.

Can an extended use period be granted?

Can certain students be given special permission to use reserve materials outside of the LRC or for a longer length of time?

  • The LRC cannot offer special borrowing privileges to select students. The loan parameters (loan period, whether item can leave LRC, etc.) indicated by the faculty or staff on the reserve form will apply equally to all students.
