Abubaker ’14: 'Here Come the Women of Change'

An environmental studies major with a development studies Nexus, Iman Abdulwassi Abubaker ’14 has focused her undergraduate career exploring solutions for environmental and development issues in numerous contexts.

She received grant funding from Mount Holyoke’s Miller Worley Center for the Environment to complete an internship at the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority in her hometown of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. During her junior year, she enrolled in the Sustainability in Europe Program in Copenhagen. There she had the opportunity to travel to more than 8 countries and 14 cities and examine sustainable technologies and lifestyles while gaining rich insight into how people are working for a better, greener, socially just world. Professional networks developed during her internships led Iman to another summer internship as a publicity intern at the Institute for Sustainable Development in Ethiopia.

Iman completed her degree this past December so that she could spend the spring semester working in environmental organizations in Washington, D.C. She is currently working as a fundraising intern at the World Resources Institute in D.C., after which she hopes to pursue graduate studies in global development and sustainability.
