Basketball: Mount Holyoke vs. Smith
THE MATCHUP: Mount Holyoke hosts New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival Smith College Thursday evening (7:00 p.m.) at the Mildred Howard Gymnasium in South Hadley, Massachusetts. In 56 previous meetings between the programs, the Pioneers own a 30-26 advantage. The teams split a pair of contests last winter. After falling 63-48 at Smith, the Lyons returned the favor on their home court, earning a thrilling 47-46 victory.

THE LYONS: Mount Holyoke (5-12, 2-3 NEWMAC) has picked up two straight wins and three in its previous four outings. On Saturday, the Lyons downed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology 64-54 for their second NEWMAC triumph of the week. Guard Erin Cain knocked down five three pointers en route to a career best 24 points. Meanwhile, guard Christine Chancy posted a season high 16 points to go with ten rebounds. It was her fourth double-double of the season. Chancy has piled up 9.4 points and team best 7.1 boards per contest to pace Mount Holyoke thus far this season. Her 33 assists are a team high, and she has come up with 26 steals. The Lyons have also received a boost from Cain, who has netted a club best 11.2 points per game behind 21 three pointers made. Guard Katie Austen has averaged 9.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per outing to go with 30 assists and 27 steals. She has tallied a pair of double-doubles. Forwards Emma Washauer and Tricia Chase have chipped in with 8.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, respectively.
THE PIONEERS: Smith (8-8, 2-4 NEWMAC) has dropped three of its last four contests after beginning the season with an overall record of 7-5. The Pioneers downed Babson College 65-58 when they last took the floor on Saturday. Guard Anna Veltri racked up 26 points to lead the way. Fellow guards Jessica Welk and Berit Schelde contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively, while forward Lisa Marie Vuono added ten rebounds and seven assists. Schelde has tallied 11.6 points per game and a team best 34 assists to set the tone for Smith thus far this season. The Pioneers have also received solid production from Welk, who has knocked down 17 three pointers en route to a squad best scoring average of 11.8 points per game. Veltri has recorded 8.4 points and 4.6 boards per outing to go with 32 assists and 23 steals. Meanwhile, Vuono has collected 7.1 points and a club high 7.5 rebounds per contest. Forward Courtney Parker has amassed a team best 22 blocked shots.
NEXT UP: Both squads will take on NEWMAC foes on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Mount Holyoke will visit WPI, while Smith will entertain Clark University.
