Chronicle Features Pontigny Book

In the June 9 issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education, a book edited by Christopher Benfey, Mellon Professor of English, and Karen Remmler, professor of German studies, is excerpted in the Melange section of the Chronicle Review. The book, Artists, Intellectuals, and World War II: The Pontigny Encounters at Mount Holyoke College, 1942-1944(University of Massachusetts Press), is a collection of essays about a series of gatherings took place at Mount Holyoke in the summers of 1942 to 1944 by leading European figures in the arts and sciences and their American counterparts. According to the publisher, the book "revisits a rare moment when a small American college became the center of European intellectual life."
