Closing remarks by Rev. Gladys Moore, dean of religious and spiritual life
Beloved Mount Holyoke colleagues—faculty, staff, and students—we now end this convocation, this calling together of our community, to begin a new academic year. We end this time together to enter into a different kind of time—the time of learning and growing, the time of stretching and being stretched by our encounters with others.
One of my favorite thinkers, Audre Lorde, once said that to encourage excellence is to go beyond the encouraged mediocrity of our society. So as we go forth into this year, let us encourage excellence in one another and in ourselves—excellence in our academics, excellence in our relationships, excellence in our community.
We now send you into this academic year with our deepest and prayerful support. We honor each one of you and your gifts, and can’t wait to see what you will bring to this campus community. Have an excellent, encouraging, and exciting year. You are blessed to be a blessing!
