Ford Foundation Professor of History and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Joseph Ellis talks to us about his new book, First Family: Abigail and John Adams, and what it’s like to see the American Revolution through the eyes of a husband and wife who were instrumental in founding the United States—even though their involvement in the creation of the new nation kept them apart for much of their marriage. Abigail and John wrote more than 1,200 letters to each other during their 59 years of marriage. Through that correspondence, Ellis has given us a love story for the ages. Ellis' book has garnered praise in some of the nation’s leading publications, including the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Vanity Fair, and the Chicago Tribune.
