MHC's Benfey Wins Ambassador Book Award
Mellon Professor of English Christopher Benfey has been awarded the 2008 Ambassador Book Award in the American Studies category for A Summer of Hummingbirds. The book was selected for "its outstanding contribution to interpreting the life and culture of the United States for people abroad," and the Awards Committee will place copies in libraries of some 30 countries around the world.
A Summer of Hummingbirds was also named as one of the best nonfiction books of 2008 by the Christian Science Monitor, the Washington Post, and the Boston Globe. Benfey will be recognized in an awards ceremony June 4 at the English-Speaking Union National Headquarters in New York City. Author Toni Morrison will be honored during the same ceremony for her work "illuminating African American life."
