Mount Holyoke College’s Department of Music has planned a full slate of festive student and faculty concerts to celebrate the annual Family and Friends Weekend, to be held October 17–19.
Setting a swinging tone, the Mount Holyoke Jazz Ensembles kick off the weekend Friday at 7:30 pm in Mary Woolley Hall’s Chapin Auditorium. “It’s Element-ary!” will offer tunes from twentieth-century giant George Gershwin, master of swing Benny Goodman, and contemporary big band Earth, Wind, and Fire. It’s all under the direction of Director of Jazz Ensembles Mark Gionfriddo.
The celebration continues Saturday at 4 pm in Abbey Chapel with a high-spirited concert from the combined forces of the MHC Symphony Orchestra, Glee Club, Chorale, and Chamber Singers. Featuring a diverse selection of sacred and secular works, the evening culminates in a performance by the Family and Friends Choir. Leading the singers in this MHC tradition are Orchestra Director Ng Tian Hui and Director of Choral Ensembles Lindsay Pope.
On Sunday at 4 pm in Pratt Hall’s McCulloch Auditorium, the Mount Holyoke Baroque Ensemble provides a thematic finale to the weekend’s concerts with “All in the Family,” which explores relationships in highly musical families. Featuring works from the head of that most musical of families, Johann Sebastian Bach, the concert will also include compositions by C.P.E. Bach and by English baroque master Henry Purcell and his brother, Daniel, a skilled church musician and an important composer in his own right.
