Young girls from the local community will be gathering at Mount Holyoke for a one-day event celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day Saturday, February 3, in Kendall Sports and Dance Complex. The packed agenda begins with the girls receiving a Molly Bish Life "Guard" Safety Kit, a resource for child and family safety. The day continues with a hip-hop dance clinic with Mount Holyoke's Natasha Hunter and a Double Dutch clinic with the Double Dutch League of Massachusetts. Both of these events provide opportunities for participants to examine body movement and enhance their knowledge of unique athletic activities.
A portion of the afternoon will be spent creating a "Mural of Movement," illustrating what the girls believe an athlete looks like, representations of lifelong fitness, and health care. Andy Whitcomb, field hockey coach and intramurals director of Mount Holyoke, will give a brief talk titled The History of Women in Sports. The day concludes with participants cheering on the Mount Holyoke College swim team as they compete against Smith College and the Mount Holyoke's basketball team as they take on Babson.
Special thanks for the event go to the Multicultural Community and College Life Grant and the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) NEWMAC Conference Grant: As Women of Color We Can: Be Healthy, Be Strong, Be One, Mount Holyoke College Athletics, Northeastern University Center for the Study of Sport and Society's, the Double Dutch League of Massachusetts, the Molly Bish Foundation, Big Y, Panera Bread, Dove Self-Esteem Fund, and Mount Holyoke College's student-athlete volunteers.
