NAGWS PRESS RELEASE (4/14/06): Norma Carr, Athletic Director at Salt Lake Community College, and Laurie Priest, Athletic Director at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, have been invited to do a lecture titled: "When these women talk, people listen: Words of Wisdom from Female Athletic Directors." The purpose of the talk is to discuss challenges and opportunities related to serving as an athletic director in the male-dominated world of college sports.
Norma Carr has served as Athletic Director over both men's and women's sports at Salt Lake Community College for the past 17 years. She was instrumental in helping Salt Lake Community College build a new athletic facility, and her teams have been very successful during her tenure. In addition to contributing to the development of successful teams at SLCC, Carr has contributed significantly to the training of volleyball officials in Utah and the surrounding areas, and she has served in a variety of leadership capacities in national sport organizations.
Laurie Priest, a tireless advocate for women in sport, is currently the Athletic Director at Mount Holyoke College, where she has overseen the physical education and athletic programs for 17 years. She directs an intercollegiate athletic program of 14 sports, a four-million dollar equestrian center, and a championship 18-hole golf course, which hosted the 2004 USGA Women's Open. Under Priest's leadership, Sports Illustrated for Women named Mount Holyoke the nation's top women's college athletics program in 2000.
This talk, scheduled for Thursday, April 27th from 2:45 - 4:00pm in Room 253 of the Salt Palace Convention Center Downtown, is sponsored by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport as part of the national conference of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, held in Salt Lake City from April 25-29.
