Rain Can't Dampen Convocation Spirits

Wednesday, September 7, 2011 - 11:00

The Gettell Amphitheater was the usual sea of blue, green, red, yellow, and purple as Mount Holyoke launched the new academic year and welcomed the class of 2015 at this week's opening convocation. While students dressed in their class colors as butterflies, Cookie Monsters and cookie boxes, "Super Moho," and even Hurricane Irene, umbrellas and rain ponchos were the accessories of the day, as intermittent rain dampened the ceremony--but not the high spirits of the crowd.

The traditional community picnic on Skinner Green was cancelled as a result of the inclement weather, but the gloomy skies did not deter the Mount Holyoke Glee Club or the speakers. Rev. Gladys Moore, President Lynn Pasquerella, Dean of the College Cerri Banks, Acting Dean of Faculty Christopher Benfey, Staff Council Cochair Gail Holt, and Student Government Association President So Jin Lee '13 all addressed the gathering. See the video of the event below. Students and other community members also contributed their photos to MHC's 2011-2012 Posterous page.
