Today, Mount Holyoke is one of the top producers of women who go on to earn Ph.D.s in the sciences. But before the school's creation, when MHC founder Mary Lyon began teaching science and math to girls in Buckland, Massachusetts in 1823, her educational approach was just as groundbreaking.

Martha Ackmann's Gender Studies 390 course recently joined some local MHC alums for a tour of the place where Mary Lyon formed her revolutionary lesson plan.
