Position Title: Greenpop Volunteer/Intern
Greenpop's internship and volunteer job programme offers new graduates or experienced practitioners the opportunity to be part of the day to day running of a dynamic start-up social enterprise in Cape Town.
As an intern/volunteer, students will play a vital role in Greenpop’s project by helping plant trees, map and monitor trees, and involving the local community in the conservation of their environment. Volunteers will be planting indigenous and fruit trees at schools, community centers, and creches in under-resourced areas around Cape Town. The planting is always done as a team effort together with the children or other community members. An essential part of this is education. As intern/volunteer, you will be involved in educating children on the importance of their natural environment, and on how they can play an active role in preserving it. This is an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the South African cultures, to learn from this unique cultural exchange, and to give children some vital knowledge about sustainable living.
The internship programme will start with an orientation day at Greenpop and usually that same/next day there will be a meeting with the supervisor as well to discuss expectations, tasks for the internship, etc. During the first week(s) of the internship Greenpop will try to make sure the student will go on a planting and monitoring day to get a good understanding of the entire process of Greenpop's urban greening program (depending on whether plant/monitoring days are scheduled at that time or not). positions available – some are office based and some are out in the field. Office team all take turns to go on planting days and work outdoors at the nursery now and then – keeping connected to the core work. We have the following internship focal areas available.
•Urban Greening Program Administration - you’ll learn about how Greenpop is structured, how we developed, what we do and how we do it!
• Nursery and Horticulture – you’ll eat from the garden every day and return home with dirty hands, you’ll prepare for plant days, propagate plants, grow vegetables and look after trees.
• Communications, Marketing, Social Media and PR – you’ll learn that we communicate a lot at Greenpop. You’ll help with social media, manage databases, assist with content management and help write press releases, newsletters, blogs.
Housing and Meals: Accommodation in Cape Town for the duration of your internship. You’ll be in a dorm room, which you’ll share with up to 4 others.Students will be responsible purchasing their own groceries and will have use of the kitchen at their accommodation to cook.

The following skills and experience are advantageous (but not necessary):
■ Practical experience in running projects
■ Experience in fundraising
■ A firm grasp of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google docs (and perhaps Photoshop)
■ Ability to work independently and on own initiative
■ An eagerness to learn and explore
■ A flexible attitude
■ A keen interest in and knowledge of environmental issues
■ A love for trees!
Funding: $3000 available from the Miller Worley Center and dispensed through the MHC UAF Program. Note: Students will need to pay Greenpop directly for program expenses. Programme fee (based on dorm room accommodation self-catering within walking distance of Greenpop office): 8 weeks - USD 1,390; 10 weeks - USD 1,600; 12 weeks - USD 1,810
