Location: Cape Town, South Africa

Position Title:  Greenpop Volunteer/Intern 
This position is being offered as a combination of 2 weeks volunteer and 8 weeks internship experience. The 2 week volunteer experience is designed to give students a better understanding of their internship role.

Description:
As a volunteer, students will play a vital role in Greenpop’s project by helping plant trees, map and monitor trees, and involving the local community in the conservation of their environment. Volunteers will be planting indigenous and fruit trees at schools, community centers, and creches in under-resourced areas around Cape Town. The planting is always done as a team effort together with the children or other community members.
An essential part of this is education. As a volunteer, you will be involved in educating children on the importance of their natural environment, and on how they can play an active role in preserving it. This is an amazing opportunity to immerse yourself in the South African cultures, to learn from this unique cultural exchange, and to give children some vital knowledge about sustainable living.

As an intern, students will be involved in most aspects of running Greenpop, and gain all-round experience in running a social enterprise. Student’s tasks will depend on experience and interest, but will likely involve marketing, communications, social media, operations, project coordination, fundraising, research, and administration.
(Greenpop is looking for a variety of interns but have a specific need for a Social Media interns who has experience in working with Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and perhaps Instagram. )

Housing and Meals: Housing will be provided. 2 meals a day (breakfast and lunch) will also be provided 5 days a week. Breakfast only, is served on the weekends.  Students will be responsible purchasing groceries for dinner and weekends and will have use of the kitchen at their accomodation to cook.

The following skills and experience are advantageous (but not necessary):
■  Practical experience in running projects
■  Experience in fundraising
■  A firm grasp of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Google docs (and perhaps Photoshop)
■  Ability to work independently and on own initiative
■  An eagerness to learn and explore
■  A flexible attitude
■  A keen interest in and knowledge of environmental issues
■  A love for trees!

Funding: $3600 (or more depending on airfare circumstances)
Available from the Miller Worley Center and dispensed through the MHC UAF Program. Note: $2000 is paid directly to the program for housing and living expenses the remaining $1600 will be given directly to student for airfare and other related expenses.
