Trustees of Reservation - Holyoke, Ma
Major: Environmental Studies
With the Trustees of Reservations, I participated mostly in the Holyoke Youth Conservation Corps program which aims to foster environmental stewardship in Holyoke MA’s young adults. An especially important facet of the program is the proactive application of environmentally helpful, hands-on work, such as stenciling water drains in the streets of Holyoke, repairing the nets that protect Sunderland’s Atlantic salmon from opportunistic herons, assisting the Fish and Wildlife Service in pulling the invasive aquatic plant, water chestnuts from several areas in MA, or simply cleaning and collecting garbage from Holyoke’s Veteran’s Park. My main role was to assist the program’s main supervisors to help facilitate the program logistically, as well as in interacting with and supporting the five Holyoke teens. I was also to be available to them as a source of insight and information about the environment as the opportunity arose.
I learned that the Trustees of Reservations has something for everyone: Landscapes and estates, programs for ecological understanding in forests and estuaries, trails and recreational areas, all of which aim their attention to every walk of human life whether younger or older, historian or scientist, hiker or stroller, whoever. Being a part of and learning about this organization through this past summer was an enlightening and ultimately fulfilling experience.
