Working at Heifer International’s Learning Center at Overlook Farm was the greatest career opportunity that I could have asked for. They emphasize experiential learning styles so that people are more successfully empowered to take action to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth. The most important aspect of Heifer’s mission is that they work with communities to achieve real, sustainable change.
As an education volunteer, I worked with single day and several-day program participants of all ages. Their experiences in the Global Village on the farm allow kids to see firsthand the kinds of homes people live in around the world and the gardening practices they use. Spending an entire day in this setting eating meals and working enables people to empathize this those who have less.
My work and research I completed on the Kenya site was especially satisfying as I used it as preparation for the coming semester (fall 2010) in which I will be traveling in Kenya and Tanzania. I also hope to use the facilitation and teaching skills I gained to emphasize the importance of the field to table connection of our food system.
