History Major, Nexus Journalism, Media and Public Discourse Minor, Class of 2015
Though born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, I spent most of my early years in Mary Lyon’s home town of Buckland. After having spent more than twenty-five years as a career chef with background and experience in both French cuisine and natural foods, I turned my attention to the plight of the increasing population of underprivileged adults and children seeking supplemental and emergency food assistance. My interest in this marginalized, segmented group of people led me to a four-year stint at the Vermont Foodbank, writing grants and participating in a wide range of development activities. The study of culinary history captured my attention early in my career as a chef. At Mount Holyoke, I am following a track that integrates women’s economic history and literary scholarship with a specific focus on food-market and labor issues. It has been my pleasure to attend both the Dublin Seminar and food historian, Sandy Oliver’s Workshop in Historic Recipe Research at Historic Deerfield during course of the last year. Each event, in its own way, has enriched my academic work in History and Journalism at MHC as well as informing the Summer UAF Fellowship I recently completed at Wistariahurst Museum doing archival research and writing in culinary and women’s history.
