Individual Appointments

The SAW Center invites all current MHC and 5-College students enrolled in a MHC course to meet with an experienced SAW peer mentor to discuss their work and process. Appointments are available Sunday through Friday during the academic year. Students may sign up for an appointment using our online scheduler or visit the SAW Center during a morning/evening drop-in hour.

Campus-Wide Workshops

Discussion Practice Group

Do you get anxious about speaking in class? Do class discussions feel like they are moving too fast to jump in to? Do you find it hard to jump into a discussions to state your point? Practice helps!

The SAW Discussion Practice Group meets Tuesdays at 8pm-9pm in Dwight 202 and is led by seasoned SAW mentors. This group provides students the opportunity to work with SAW mentors and their peers on activities to build fluency, prepare for class, and become a more confident discussion participant. The best method for building discussion skills is by actively engaging in discussions and gaining experience! The group is open to all, but is particularly suitable for students who identify as second language speakers of English or simply want to build their ability to maintain classroom level discussion. No sign up required, however, participants are encouraged to email saw@mtholyoke.edu if they would like to receive group updates and notifications.

Thesis Writing Group

The Thesis Writing Group is open to all thesis-writing seniors and is designed to provide ongoing writing support, structure, and space for thesis writers. This group is led by SAW peer mentors and offers thesis writers the opportunity to write-on-site and discuss their work in a relaxed, distraction-free environment. Group participants have the opportunity to discuss and refine your thesis writing goals, stay motivated with the help of their peers, receive feedback and advice on their writing, and discuss strategies for overcoming writer’s block and other obstacles that impede progress. This group meets Sunday afternoon, 2-4pm, in Dwight 201 during the academic year. Thesis Writing Workshops

In addition the weekly writing circle, the SAW Program offers workshops throughout the semester to support thesis writers. Spring 2018 workshops include:

Editing and Revising Your Thesis
Monday, February 26, 7-9PM, Dwight 202
Revising your thesis draft can be a daunting task. This workshop will help you tackle the revising process and break it into manageable steps. There will be time to write on site, so bring a hard copy of your draft, feedback from your readers and anything else you need!

Thesis Defense Preparation
Thursday, March 8, 6:30-8:30PM, Dwight 202
Are you excited to submit your thesis, but nervous about your defense? Or unsure about what a thesis defense even entails? This workshop will clarify the components of a defense and give you an opportunity to start practicing.

Thesis Defense Preparation: Part II
Monday, April 2, 7-9PM, Dwight 202
In this workshop we will continue to focus on how to structure a strong thesis defense, providing a space to practice presenting and receive feedback. For this workshop, please prepare a short portion of your defense that you would like to share with an audience of peers.

Managing Thesis Stress
Monday, April 23, 7-9PM, Dwight 202
In this workshop we will talk about how to recognize and manage stress that is related to or affecting your senior thesis work. We will walk you through easy and adaptable strategies for calming the mind and relieving tension, including breathing exercises, muscle relaxation and visualization.
