Additional Teacher Licensure

Mount Holyoke has designed specific modules for previously licensed teachers and current students who are pursuing initial licensure to independently apply for an Additional License in one of the following three areas.  Scholarships are available!

New Level/Subject Area—150-hour internship; MTEL test

Teacher candidates working toward an initial license may earn a license in the same field at a new grade level or subject area by passing any required MTEL test (if applicable) or in the case that there is no subject matter test, by passing a competency review.  The teacher candidate will need to complete a practicum equivalent/internship of at least 150 hours in the role of the license sought under the supervision of a teacher with that particular license.

English Language Learners/ESL (PreK-6 or 5-12)—150-hour internship; coursework; MTEL test

The ESL/ELL courses are specifically designed to provide opportunities for current students pursuing initial licensure to independently apply for an Additional License in English as Second Language/English Language Learners.  These courses are taken individually as part of the regular J-term or summer session PaGE course offerings.   Once candidates have completed the courses, they must register for and complete a practicum equivalent/internship of at least 150 hours in the role of the license sought under the supervision of a teacher with that particular license. This license includes a specific MTEL tests.  Once this is complete the teacher candidates will be prepared to apply independently to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the additional license. Tuition associated with coursework and internship.

Moderate Disabilities (PreK—8 or 5-12) - 2 internships; coursework; MTEL test

The Special Education/Moderate Disabilities courses are specifically designed to provide opportunities for current students pursuing initial licensure to independently apply for an Additional License in Special Education/Moderate Disabilities.  With the exception of the internships, these courses are taken individually as part of the regular J-term or summer session PaGE course offerings.   Once candidates have completed the courses, the internships, and specific MTEL tests, they will be prepared to apply independently to the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for the additional license. Tuition associated with coursework and internships.
