Pomp, Ponies, and a Picnic: Convocation to Celebrate New Year and Opening of Kendade Hall

As always, convocation—the ceremonial beginning of the academic year—will offer the staples: the first chance for seniors to wear caps and gowns, the singing of the alma mater, and remarks by students, faculty, and staff. But this year the Mount Holyoke community will also usher in a new era of interdisciplinary integration in the sciences with the opening of Kendade Hall, the heart of the College’s new state-of-the-art science center. Convocation will be held Wednesday, September 4, at Gettell Amphitheater at 4 pm (in Mary Woolley Hall’s Chapin Auditorium in case of rain). The entire Mount Holyoke community is invited to be a part of the event, and College offices may close at 4 pm so that MHC staff can attend. Immediately following convocation, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Kendade Hall, which will be open for viewing. Don’t miss this opportunity to see the new 40,000-square-foot building that features a dramatic 3,000-square-foot, four-story atrium. The next order of the day will be the traditional community picnic—complete with pony rides, a “bounce house” (for children only), vegan and traditional hot dogs and burgers, and Dining Services’ famous brownies. The picnic, which is open to students, and faculty and staff and their families, will take place on Skinner Green. more>
