Spotlighting Mount Holyoke The admission office is preparing to welcome high school seniors and their parents to campus for Senior Spotlight 1999 (October 17 - 18). An extra day of spotlight, October 16, will be devoted to ALANA students to acquaint them with the wide range of cultural offerings and resources on campus. The admission office will "spotlight" Mount Holyoke's academic life, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, and residential living experience. Spotlight will offer visitors insight into MHC's unique offerings and dynamic student body. The prospective students will attend a class, spend the night in the residence halls, and attend panels and discussion groups. Senior Spotlight is a time for the Mount Holyoke community to come together. While the admission office maintains primary responsibility for Spotlight, the program's success is contingent on the assistance of faculty, students, and staff. Admission will call upon students to serve as hostesses and on faculty to participate in panel discussions and to welcome these students into their classes. Mark Saturday - Monday, October 16, 17, and 18, on your calendar and join the admission office in welcoming these special visitors.

STUDENTS

Presidential Scholars: Students to Attend Democratic/Republican Conventions, Summer 2000 The Career Development Center, the Weissman Center for Leadership, and the president's office are pleased to provide a fellowship for two students to participate in the Presidential Scholars Program sponsored by the Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars. Presidential Scholars from colleges across the country will be selected to spend two weeks at the site of the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia (July 23 - August 4, 2000) and the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles (August 6 - 18, 2000). One week prior to the convention, students are taught and trained by college faculty to participate in this important event in the presidential race for the White House. Students are then assigned as volunteers to assist with the work of the convention during the second week. Presidential Scholars have the opportunity to see democracy in action at both the grassroots and national levels. The $2,500 fellowship covers application, program fees, and housing. The two MHC participants are expected to give presentations when they return to campus next fall. Students who will be returning to campus in the fall of 2000 are eligible for this program. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of demonstrated leadership skills, academic excellence, and interest in government and politics. To apply, students must submit the Presidential Scholars application (available at the CDC), two letters of recommendation, a resume and current transcript, and a 600-word essay on "The Most Important Challenge Facing the Next U.S. President." Completed applications are due at the CDC by 5 pm on Thursday, November 4.
