Weissman Center for Leadership
and the Liberal Arts

Fall 2005

The Women of Abu Ghraib

Alumnae, current and prospective students and their guests are invited to join us as we launch the Weissman Center on the Road, a promising collaboration between the center and the Mount Holyoke College Alumnae Association. The Center will travel first to Washington, D.C., for an event linked to the Fall 2005 Law and Dis/Order series.

Join us to hear some of the most riveting and untold stories of the ongoing war in Iraq. Journalist Tara McKelvey has interviewed women who have emerged from detainment at Abu Ghraib, one of Iraq’s most controversial prisons.

McKelvey, a senior editor at The American Prospect and a contributing editor for Marie-Claire magazine, will discuss the haunting testimonies that she has gathered from Iraqi women. McKelvey, who has published widely on issues facing women and girls, as well as on justice, imprisonment, and human rights, will provide an absorbing global perspective both on the war in Iraq and on women and prisons.
