    • David Friedman is Associate Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has taught since 1978. He has held fellowships at I Tatti in Florence, the American Academy in Rome, and the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton. His book Florentine New Towns: Urban Design in the Late Middle Ages (MIT Press) won the Alice Davis Hitchcock award from the Society of Architectural Historians for the most distinguished work of architectural history in 1989. His current research focuses on the history of mapping and its application to urban design, and this subject--specifically as it relates to the city of Rome--will be the subject of his talk at Mount Holyoke College.
