This course examines PK-12 education emphasizing the arts in classroom content as a civil right and human right. Social, political, and cultural influences on U.S. schooling are critically examined with the goal to reinvent interdisciplinary classroom curricula with the arts as a central avenue to a social justice framework. Questions include: When constructing democratic spaces of learning, do the voices of students and families influence education curriculum? What role do the arts play in community participation, students’ achievement, and active engagement? How does the construction of diverse teaching practices assertively combat institutionalized oppressions while excavating new landscapes?
