Current research and contemporary classroom practice guide this course in defining the sociopolitical context of education. Units of study and investigation include: 1) Defining Multicultural Education for School Reform; 2) Racism, Discrimination, and Expectations of Students’ Achievement; 3) Structural and Organizational Issues in Classrooms and Schools; 4) Culture, Identity, and Learning; 5) Linguistic Diversity in U.S. Classrooms; 6) Understanding Student Learning and School Achievement; 7) Adapting Curriculum for Multicultural Classrooms. The course includes research rooted in case studies from U.S. schools in the lives of real students in real classrooms.
