Guidelines for Proposing Winter and Summer Courses

  1. Download the course proposal form; the form is a fillable Word document.
  2. Complete the proposal, save it to your drive, and then send it as an attachment to page@mtholyoke.edu.

Types of Courses Offered

Non-credit Course:
Not an academic topic and/or does not meet frequently enough to warrant credit and/or does not have an evaluative component and/or is not academically rigorous. Winter.

One-credit Course:
Is academically rigorous and as appropriate for the subject matter includes quizzes, a test, and a final paper, project, or exam. Winter.

Two-credit Course:
Is academically rigorous and as appropriate for the subject matter includes quizzes, a test, a paper, and a final paper, project, or exam. Winter and Summer.

Four-credit Course:
Is academically rigorous and as appropriate for the subject matter includes quizzes, a test, a paper, and a final paper, project, or exam. Summer. 

Winter Session

January 5-16, 2015
In general, please schedule regular class meetings for the entire time span (10 days).

For one-credit winter classes:
If the class spans ten (10) days, then it should meet three days a week for 105 minutes (1.75 hours) each day in either the morning or afternoon for a total of six (6) meetings.

For two-credit winter classes:
If the class spans ten (10) days, then it should meet at least four (4) days a week for three (3) hours each day in either the morning or afternoon for  a total of eight (8) meetings.

Summer Sessions

Summer Session 1

  • May 26 – July 1, 2015

Summer Session 2

  • July 7 – August 12, 2015

Two and Four-Credit Summer Classes

  • Two-credit summer classes are half academic courses compressed into a 5-week session.
  • Four-credit summer classes are full academic classes compressed into a 5-week session.
