What is Girls Who Code?

Girls Who Code is a national non-profit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology. Girls Who Code works to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills to pursue 21st century opportunities.

What is Mount Holyoke College?

As the oldest women's college in the world and the first of the Seven Sisters—the female equivalent of the once predominantly male Ivy League—Mount Holyoke College has led the way in women's education for nearly 180 years.

Mount Holyoke is collaborating with Girls Who Code to offer the first Girls Who Code Campus program in Western Massachusetts on its campus in South Hadley.

Who is eligible to attend this program?

This is an introductory program for girls who are new to computer science.To apply, you must be a rising 9th through 12th grader and be able to spend the full two weeks (Aug 7-18) with us, Mon-Fri 10 am-4 pm.

Are boys eligible to attend?

This program is intended for students who identify as female regardless of gender assignment at birth or legal recognition.

What will girls learn in the Introduction to Web Development course?

The Introduction to Web Development Campus program uses JavaScript, HTML and CSS to introduce the basics of web design.But more than the technical learning and project work, students will be inspired by female role models and develop their potential for personal and professional success related to careers in tech.

What does the application process look like?

All eligible 9th through 12th grade students can apply and pay for the program through the Girls Who Code online application. Girls Who Code does not ask for your GPA, transcript, or any recommendations or personal statements. The application also includes information on scholarship eligibility and a section to apply for a full scholarship. Scholarship application is a very easy process, which only requires uploading a form to determine eligibility.

How much does the program cost?

This program costs $2,000, which covers tuition, materials and lunch each day.We also provide a limited number of need-based full-program scholarships for students who qualify.

When is the application deadline?

The online application will remain open until the program is full.There is no application deadline, though seats will fill quickly.Students may be placed on a waitlist if a program already has 25 students.

When are students notified of their acceptance?

All students and their parents or guardians will be notified of their acceptance via email shortly after their application is completed and reviewed.If a program is full, students may be placed on a waitlist.

Will housing be provided?

No housing is provided.This is a day program.

How many girls are in each classroom?

Each classroom hosts 25 girls, an 8:1 student to teacher ratio, to ensure support from our teaching staff while the girls work on small group and individual projects.
