Note: The first class session will be held on Tuesday May 30, 2017 at 9:00am in Kendade 107. The first
lab session will be on Thursday June 1 in Carr LL10.
Tuition: $1400 and $700 Course fee
Note: Students will need to purchase a laboratory notebook and safety goggles (total ca. $35).
Introduces the core principles of organic chemistry via a broad treatment of structure and reactivity of carbon compounds. Topics include atomic and molecular structure, acid-base chemistry, conformational analysis, stereochemistry, the chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, and alkyl halides, as well as an introduction to Infrared and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Laboratory work includes exposure to techniques for the separation, isolation, purification, and spectroscopic identification of organic molecules.
Prerequisite: General Chemistry II with a grade of C or higher
