Lab Meeting Times:  Tuesday and Thursday   1:00 – 4:30 pm

Location: Mount Holyoke College, 50 College St., South Hadley, MA (Room TBA)

Credits: Four

Tuition: $1400 and $700 Course fee

Note: Students will need to purchase a model kit (ca. $30), access to the Sapling on-line HW system (ca. $30), and a laboratory notebook and safety goggles (total ca. $25).

Introduces the core principles of organic chemistry via a broad treatment of structure and reactivity of carbon compounds. Topics include atomic and molecular structure, acid-base chemistry, conformational analysis, stereochemistry, the chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and alkyl halides. Laboratory work includes exposure to techniques for the preparation, isolation, purification and identification of organic molecules.

Prerequisite:  General Chemistry II with a grade of C or higher
