This field study course provides a community-based research learning approach to studying the relationship between education, social justice, human rights, and community development in South Africa. Examining the progress made since the first democratic election in 1994, through various education initiatives, students will apply this analysis to education, and examine their own roles as actors in a social context. The course includes: internship placements; lectures, seminars, and workshops led by faculty and community members; sociocultural, political, historical, and geographic excursions; individual research project; and online pre-departure and re-entry activities.
