From chemistry research at MHC to a fellowship in psychiatry

Shelly T Hsiao '10 PA, Master of Physician Assistant

Major: Biochemistry

Research Group at MHC: Chen Lab

Employer: Psychiatry Fellowship, Department of Psychiatry, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics

I am currently a physician assistant (PA) doing a fellowship in psychiatry at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. My practice includes providing medical management and therapy sessions for both adults and children in inpatient and outpatient settings.

As a PA, I utilize a range of psychotropic medications with numerous mechanisms, doses, and side effects that require me to recall and apply my biochemistry knowledge on a daily basis. I love practicing medicine and feel confident in my skills because of the solid science education and Chemistry research experiences I received when I was an undergraduate at Mount Holyoke College.
