Name: Peter Klemperer
Title: Assistant Professor
Department: Computer Science
Areas of study: computer security, computer systems, robotics
Research focus: Peter F. Klemperer is interested in all aspects of computer security, especially usability and virtualized systems — running different applications requiring different operating systems on one computer system. He studies how virtualization can provide an isolated high-ground position for malware detection in operating systems and processes. He enjoys developing solutions to engineering problems in computer systems.
What drew you to your area of study: I enjoy using engineering to solve real-world problems.
What appeals to you about being a professor at Mount Holyoke: I love working with the students! Small class sizes allow for individualized attention. The Makerspace has been an amazing opportunity to work with students relating computing to the physical world.
What do you like about teaching: I enjoy introducing students to computer science and working with students learning how programming can solve real-world problems.
What do you look forward to at Mount Holyoke: Many things. I’m excited to be one of the College’s new Innovation Hires — in my case, in the area of engineering — to shape innovative, collaborative and interdisciplinary directions in the curriculum. The Makerspace is going to be be expanded in 2018 and I look forward to working in it, alongside students. Shorter term, I'm excited to see what students will be able to do with our new robotics offering.
Favorite previous work/volunteer/research/teaching experiences: Two favorites: coaching a golf-based after-school program for third-graders and advising two high school students in making LED light-up earrings.
Favorite things about the campus and region so far: I enjoy eating Cookie Monster ice cream with the cows at Flayvors.
What was your favorite class as an undergraduate: My favorite class as an undergraduate was Senior Design Lab, where I made a digital slide-whistle.
What do you like to do when you are not working: I enjoy painting and playing with my family.
