Name: Colby Newsham ’19
Hometown: Harvard, Massachusetts
Academics: politics major
Campus involvement: I am a member of the varsity field hockey team. I was also a member of Mount Holyoke’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
A place or experience you will miss at Mount Holyoke: I will miss the Kendall sports facilities and the turf. I have spent more time in the athletics complex than any other place on campus. I have made lifelong friends and created countless memories that have made my time at Mount Holyoke irreplaceable.
Proudest accomplishment at Mount Holyoke: My proudest accomplishment at Mount Holyoke was winning the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey championship in 2015. The story of our season epitomizes resilience, heart and dedication. Seeded fifth out of nine, no one thought we would even make it to the championship game. Through our passion and perseverance, we ended up winning the championship in a shoot-out and went to the national tournament.
How a close connection with a faculty member has shaped you: My professor and thesis advisor, Cora Fernandez Anderson in the politics department, encouraged me to pursue both of my passions: sports and politics. She supported me in my endeavors to combine the two in a senior thesis project. And she challenged me to grow as a researcher, writer and student.
Best takeaway from internship or research experiences: I had the privilege of working with our incredible athletics department. I learned the importance of teamwork, leadership and passion for excellence.
Favorite Five College experience: My favorite Five College experience has been taking classes in Smith College’s Department of Exercise and Sport Studies. It is an extremely supportive and welcoming department. One of my Smith professors actually became one of my senior thesis advisors.
Future plans: I am pursuing a master’s degree in sport industry management.
