Raised $1,900 to Fund Higher Education for Women in Bangladesh

Maya Mason’s project aimed to reduce the impact of gender inequality by directly assisting oppressed yet motivated women in developing countries to gain access to higher education. Maya collaborated with the Grameen Shikkha Education Foundation to create a scholarship to help women pursue higher education. In her hometown, she raised $1,900, which is $400 more than is needed to finance one woman’s degree in Bangladesh for five years. After five years, another $1,500 will be available for another woman’s education through the interest accrued in the Grameen Bank. Because Maya’s community gave crucial support for raising these funds, she named the scholarship The Maya Mason Scholarship Honoring the Community Spirit of Port Jefferson, New York.
