Elevating the status of women
Siobhan Thomas-Smith, of Seattle, Washington, has worked hard at her school to elevate the status of women. By publishing an editorial in her school newspaper and giving a powerful classroom speech, she brought an end to the school's "Girls Fantasy League" (a system that ranked every girl at the school).
Siobhan also created an independent women's studies option, to be taught next year, and is working to establish a formal gender studies class as part of the school's core curriculum. Since sending in her action project report, Siobhan has learned that twice as many students than anticipated have signed up for the women's studies class!
