Son Sen

Son Sen (1930-1997) was a member of the Communist Party of Kampuchea from 1974-1992. Much like his counterparts, Son Sen studied in Paris in 1950's on a scholarship. While In France, Son Sen was drawn to Communist learnings and became associated with Ieng Sary and Saloth Sar, "Pol Pot". Upon his return to Cambodia, Son Sen became involved in secretive activities of the Communist Party of Kampuchea.

Under Sihanouk, Son Sen fled into eastern Cambodia to escape persecution from the secret police. Once the Khmer Rouge gained control, Son Sen served as the minister of defense and the deputy prime minister. Son Sen was known by aliases like "Brother 89" and or "Khieu". Ultimately, Son Sen and his extended family was cruelly murdered by Saloth Sar ("Pol Pot" ), his trusted friend, in 1997 because he advocated participation in peace processes outlined by the Paris Peace Agreements.
