German Immigration: A Personal History

I first thought of the idea for this website when I realized that I have family sources who I could utilize to obtain a personal account of a phenomenon that millions take part in on a daily basis: immigration. Though during two different periods of history, relatives from both sides of my family left their home countries to establish a life in the United States. In the early 20th century, my great-grandparents on my father’s side emigrated from Bari, Italy to Worcester, Massachusetts. Then after the Second World War, my grandparents on my mother’s side emigrated from Germany to Maryland. Each story demonstrates particular reasons for immigrating and provides a first-hand account of assimilation into the American workforce and culture. It is interesting to see how the decisions of my relatives to move to the “land of opportunity” affect my life today. Enjoy the first-hand accounts of European immigration to the United States.
