Deeper Than Deja Vu
28 May 2006 (MHC Graduation Day 2006)
In the sunlight of this moment, as I watch
those present, I see those others, too.
In these rites of passage, some part of us
remains in the frozen moment, out of time,
and if you look just a bit off kilter
in the crevices of the here and now
you can see them, the residual spirits,
and sometimes serendipity may allow
a fleeting glimpse of another you.
We are always multiple, here and elsewheres,
an infinite series of fragmented subjectivities.
Perhaps for some of us, even the vision beyond
present moment and past moments is possible,
something deeper than deja vu,
but I suspect our wisdom is insufficient
to prepare us to see it.
