A Sociopath at Nightfall
(completed on Friday, 13 June 2008)
A sociopath at nightfall,
in Valentine Hall,
the way a corpse lacks humor.
A girl friend sits on the bed
watching him watching the window
looking as if every moment was crushing.
He turns to face her,
raging against the world's ills
his words lack restraint:
boundaries are meaningless,
watching tears forming
at the edges of her eyes,
he is a computer program calculating
algorithms of control and redirection,
lacking in remorse before the crime.
A coven of shadows moves along the far wall
and gradually dominates the room in Valentine Hall.
Nearly midnight and she has a morning exam,
but he does not care, is hardly aware
that she is more than flesh and blood
or a mannequin for his desires and lies:
spinning tales from the cloth of his past
conversations with others' who have suffered,
turning their suffering into his own,
spinning his history from their histories:
his mother's childhood of abuse, his sister's rape,
his uncle's anguish, alienation, and suicide,
his father's solitude in the basement of a glass house:
he doesn't have to search far to find the words:
he is a wordsmith, a shape shifter of words:
he is a word thief, a stealer of souls.
He steals. In the stillness of a darkened corner
a computer screen flickers a digital here and now,
the manufactured present from a programmed past:
racing objects dart about a black screen,
a cold, black screen in a black monitor
emiting an inaudible whine in the musty air.
It is a Twilight Zone world
without Rod Serling to give the moral,
to set the tone and segue to commercials.
Reality will not be right back:
the digital lies will not coalesce into matter:
the totalitarian absoluteness of visions
based in the ethereal, nightmare world of madness
that obliterates material reality:
sisters, mother, father, the smiling faces of love,
the tender embraces, the moments of laughter,
the shared moments that gave life life
are lost in the digitized darkness,
in the coffin like mind of a sociopath.
