Winter Weather Parking Update

Due to winter weather conditions, please adhere to the following parking regulations to ensure Facilities Management can safely and efficiently clear campus roadways and lots.

The Gorse Lot Rule

During the snow season (November 1–April 1), all vehicles left on campus must be moved to the Gorse Lot before a predicted snowstorm.

  • Students: You must remain in designated student lots at all times. If your usual lot is being cleared, you will receive a specific email notification with instructions on when and where to move.
  • Long-term Parking: If you are away from campus, your vehicle must be in the Gorse Lot to avoid being towed.

Overnight Parking Ban

The winter overnight parking ban is currently in effect (December 1 – March 15).

  • Ban Details: No parking is allowed in faculty/staff spaces between 2 am and 5 am on roadways, regardless of weather.
  • Enforcement: Vehicles in violation may be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense to allow for overnight plowing.
  • Accessible Parking: Please see the Parking Office website for information about accessible parking during winter weather.

Protect yourself from the cold

Exposure to extreme cold can result in your body losing heat faster than it can produce it, potentially leading to frostnip, frostbite or hypothermia. Protect yourself by:

  • Staying indoors: Limit your time outside as much as possible.
  • Dress in layers: Use a thin wicking base layer to stay dry, a fleece or wool middle layer for warmth and a wind-resistant outer coat.
  • Cover up: Wear a hat and mittens, and use a scarf to protect your lungs.
  • Stay dry: Wet clothing pulls heat away from your body.
  • Prepare your room or office: Close your windows and ensure your thermostat is not set to the lowest temperature.

Visit the National Weather Service and Mass.gov for more information on cold-weather safety.
