Science Center Microscopy Facility

Electron microscopes are significantly improving the experiences of students, both in the classroom and in their research.

The Science Center Microscopy Facility was formally organized when the electron microscopes and several research-quality light microscopes from several science departments were designated to be part of an interdisciplinary facility. These microscopes and their ancillary equipment are open to all members of the college.

Instrumentation

The Science Center Microscopy Facility has a selection of electron microscopes, light microscopes and atomic force microscopes.

Philips CM 100 Transmission Electron Microscope
The Phillips CM100 transmission electron microscope, although ideally suited for biological thin sections, has successfully imaged a variety of other types of specimens including nanoparticles.

Olympus BX51 reflected light microscope
Olympus BX51 microscope with transmitted and reflected light optics.
Olympus BX41 fluorescence microscope
The Olympus BX41 is equipped for brightfield, phase, and fluorescence optics. The PixeLink monochrome camera is capable of imaging moderately bright fluorescence.
Nikon 50Ti fluorescence microscope
The Nikon 50Ti upright microscopes are equipped for brightfield, phase, and fluorescence optics. The PixeLink monochrome camera is capable of imaging moderately bright fluorescence. This microscope is mainly a teaching microscope.
Nikon TE2000 fluorescence microscope
The Nikon TE2000 inverted microscope is equipped for brightfield, phase, DIC and fluorescence optics and low light imaging with a Roper Scientific Coolsnap HQ camera, Ludl filter wheels, shutters and Z drive.
Quanta 200 SEM
The FEI Quanta 200 SEM operates in three vacuum modes: conventional high vacuum, low vacuum and environmental mode.

Who can use the facility?

Anyone associated with Mount Holyoke College, faculty, staff and students, are welcome users of any of the microscopes.  Members of the Five Colleges are welcome visitors and may use any of the microscopes as time allows.

Appropriate training is required and is available either through one of the formal courses or by individual sessions.

For short term projects, the microscopes can be used with assistance of facility staff.
