Nicole C. Vaget

Nicole Vaget teaches all levels of language and culture/literature courses. She is a member of the European studies program and the romance language program faculties. She has chaired the French department, as well as the European studies program, and the romance languages and literatures program.

Vaget's publications are in the fields of French and Francophone cultural studies, eighteenth-century literature, and pedagogical application of technology. Her latest book, Saint-Jean-d'Arvey en Savoie (Montmélian, La Fontaine de Siloé, 1999), is a unique and personal cultural study of a socioeconomic group of French peasants that no longer exists.

A pioneer in distance learning, through the use of satellite technology and the Web, Vaget has taught French to African students in Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Kenya under the auspices of the African Virtual University.

Vaget's latest Web project is the publication in TEI (Teaching Encoding Initiative, which is XTML based) of a poem by Jean Metellus, “Au pipirite chantant.” The poem is a pluri-disciplinary approach to Haïti, its literature, music, art and history.

In class, Vaget's students present their papers in multimedia form using the “Digital Storytelling” method.
