MHC major: Politics

My work today: After more than 25 years working in politics, education, media, and philanthropy, I'm now consulting with nonprofits and philanthropies, primarily to help them build community and advance their mission through strategic planning, marketing, and community engagement. I've also turned my skills in graphic design and website development into a digital design firm, Ruby Shoes Media.

How being SGA president shaped me:  My role as SGA president gave me hands-on, practical experience in leading teams, developing strategies, practicing diplomacy, advancing a vision, and fostering partnerships and alliances. What has become apparent to me only recently, however, is the deep commitment to community building that runs through my life. Clearly, that passion for community has its roots in the opportunity I was given to represent and lead a community of students.

My biggest life accomplishment to date is: I've met lots of inspiring people, from the president of the United States to Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his Holiness the Dalai Lama. While I cherish these experiences, I am most proud of my role as mentor, coach, and friend to the remarkable young women who have worked for me over the years. My deep and steady commitment to supporting and championing other women comes directly from my experience at Mount Holyoke.
