Interim President Beverly Daniel Tatum speaks in Abu Dhabi

On March 8, 2023 Mount Holyoke College Interim President Beverly Daniel Tatum spoke at New York University Abu Dhabi in honor of International Women's Day, discussing the interplay between culture and higher education, leadership and empowerment.

On March 8, 2023, Interim President Beverly Daniel Tatum traveled to the United Arab Emirates to give a special talk at NYU Abu Dhabi in honor of International Women's Day. Tatum joined New York University Abu Dhabi Vice Chancellor Mariët Westermann in conversation as they discussed the interplay between culture and higher education, leadership and empowerment.

In their conversation, Tatum and Westermann explored important questions around leadership, empowerment and education. They interrogated what can be learned from today’s women leaders in higher education,  what women leaders are cognizant of when preparing youth — especially girls — for success, and how to make education more accessible to women, especially from underserved communities.

This event — which was in person on the NYU Abu Dhabi campus and livstreamed — was hosted by the NYU Abu Dhabi Office of Inclusion and Equity in partnership with NYU Women Lead. Before the event, Tatum and Trisha Tanner ’00, executive director of the Alumnae Association, had a chance to meet with local alums Sara Pervaiz Amjad ’13 and Izmeen Adeel Bajwa ’99.

While in Abu Dhabi, Tatum also attended the 2023 Forbes 30/50 Summit which was held from March 7–10. Forbes magazine, which is well known for its “Forbes 30 Under 30” list — an important honor for young entrepreneurs and leaders — has recently launched a new “50 Over 50” list, which showcases how “for women, experience and wisdom and leadership mean that success no longer has an expiration date.” Speakers for the event included Hillary Rodham Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, Gloria Steinam, Billie Jean King and Misty Copeland.

A number of Mount Holyoke alums have been recognized by Forbes over the years. Charu Sharma ’14  was recognized in the “30 Under 30 — Healthcare” list in 2022, Isabel Mogstad ’13 was celebrated in the “30 Under 30 — Energy” list in 2020 and Ellen Chilemba ’17 was recognized in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Africa listing in 2015. Sheila Lirio Marcelo ’93 was just recognized in the 2022 “50 Over 50: Entrepreneurs” list. Additionally, Emma Wolff ’21 and Kannah Landford ’19 were named “30 Under 30 Scholars” in 2019 and 2018 respectively.
