Turning dreams into reality with MHC Semester in D.C.
Mount Holyoke College senior Amelia Anderson ’26 reflects on the powerful boost MHC Semester in D.C. gave to her career, her network and her confidence.
Now that I’ve returned to Mount Holyoke College for my final semester, I thought it was time to reflect on my experience this fall with MHC Semester in D.C. and the Washington Semester Program | American University.
Mount Holyoke’s MHC Semester in D.C. program (led by Lydia Malone FP’13) combines professional development with academic learning. In addition to classes at American University, students undertake both a semester-long independent study and an internship. My independent study explored the development of the originalist ideology on the Supreme Court from 2015 to 2025, and I had the opportunity to attend oral arguments as part of my research.
The Weissman Center for Leadership pairs each student with an alum based in Washington, D.C., for ongoing guidance and mentorship. I am so grateful to have been paired with Naomi Barry-Perez ’96, an incredible role model and mentor. I will be a first-generation law student, and Barry-Perez has contributed greatly to supporting me as I start my application process. Every time we met, she listened to my concerns about law school and helped me navigate them — covering Law School Admission Test preparation, exploring legal specialties and choosing the right timing for my applications. She shared her experiences as a woman in the legal field and the challenges of civil rights work. Her mentorship deeply inspired me by demonstrating that I can pursue and succeed in a legal career despite my fears. Her support boosted my confidence and belief in my abilities.
The Alum Association of Mount Holyoke College is truly exceptional — each alum we met this semester truly exemplified Mount Holyoke’s values of purposeful leadership, intellectual curiosity and true kindness. I will be honored to join their ranks in a few months.
My time as a program management and research intern at the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College was a wonderful experience. I am grateful to Lizzie Dixon and Tracie Potts, MSJ, for their guidance and mentorship. They motivated me to believe more in myself and my skills, and they provided opportunities to strengthen areas such as interpersonal communication, taking initiative and networking. They helped me choose projects that aligned with my interests, such as creating a book documenting the Institute’s history. They went above and beyond to ensure my time at Eisenhower was enriching and that I felt prepared for my next career steps. This semester has been truly transformative for me, both personally and professionally, thanks to their inspiring leadership.
Thanks to Eisenhower, I had the wonderful opportunity to plan, facilitate and enjoy some truly memorable student events. These included touring the U.S. Capitol with Senator Mark Kelly, exploring the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, volunteering at Bread for the City and visiting the Congressional Management Foundation. I also began developing an incredible professional network that I know I will be able to rely on after graduation.
My experience in Washington, D.C., showed me how passionate I am about public service. I am eager to pursue a meaningful career in civil rights, making a difference through legislation and legal work. After graduating in May, I plan to return to Washington, D.C., to begin my professional career before attending law school. MHC gave me more than an education — it gave me the resources, connections and mentorship I needed to truly believe in myself. Because of MHC Semester in D.C., I am ready to turn my dreams into reality.
